Meet Karen from Lincoln, Nebraska, who welcomed Sophia from South Korea and Jenith from Taiwan into her home.
"A high school exchange year is so much more than hosting an exchange student for one year. It's discovering a family in another part of the world that lasts for life."
How long have you been hosting exchange students?
I have been hosting with EF for over 30 years. Every student and experience is different, but they are all life-changing in their own way.
What's it like to have teenagers in your home now that your own children have moved out?
Hosting keeps me young! I love to see my students build a brand new life for themselves here in the US. And they always teach me a lot of new things. I've learned something different from every single student that I've hosted.
What's your favorite memory from hosting Sophia and Jenith this year?
In Taiwan and Korea they don't have anything like Prom, so it was so wonderful to witness the girls' excitement over the event. We took them shopping to find the perfect dresses and my daughter Aimee did their hair and makeup. They looked beautiful - and had a blast!
What advice do you have for future host families?
You will not regret this experience. Students just want to become a part of your everyday, American life. Before you know it, it will be impossible to picture your world without them!
